Start from the Lowther Castle Inn in Hackthorpe, head south west to low Knipe before picking up the escarpment to the east of the River Lowther up to Shap Abbey and Shap.

Transport. The 106 bus runs along the A6 between Penrith and Hackthorpe and Shap. Be careful not to miss the last bus back to Penrith in the evening.
